Sonavan is the member of Lahanti SHG under Increasing Community Capacity for Holistic Development Project-I. She is 26 years old. Sonavan could not complete secondary education due to poverty. She is living with her parents at Alimganj village under Haripur Union. Her father (60) is day laborer and small share cropper. They were living hand to mouth. They never thought of buying a cow/bullock by their very limited family income.
After being involved into Heifer project, she dreamed of contributing to his family income. Like other project participants, Sonavan attended the trainings on Heifer cornerstones, improved animal management, and gander & justice
Her participation to the training contributed very much to shift her attention from desire of income earning to do work for underprivileged children who are out of schooling. She thought many times to find the scopes and opportunities but failed to make so. As she was committed, she started to teach some children at her home privately. She never thinks of money from the children of poor families. She only charges minimum money for those who come from well off family. She is continuing this work till now in accordance with her affordability
In the meantime, Sanovan got a bullock from the project costing 12000 BDT during January, 2010. After few months of rearing, she sold the bullock as the cost of 23000 BDT. Then she deposited a significant part of her gift amount to the group fund. She utilized the rest of the money to purchase a buffalo along with the contribution from his father. Her father now earns money by selling plough to other land with the support of his own buffalo and others. It has become a major source of income for Sonavan’s family.
Thus, Sonavan and her family members together with the support of Heifer project has change their family condition into positive one. Sonavan is playing very proactive role in group as well as his family. Her future dream is to set up a school for educating the children of poverty stricken families by her own effort
